Applications now being accepted for two new technology degrees, IT and CSGI.
Claremont, NH – Two new programs at River Valley Community College (RVCC) in high growth fields are launching this fall and provide opportunities for students to enter fields that have great earnings potential. The two associate degrees are in information technology, and computer science and global innovation and classes will be offered in Claremont. They have been designed with business and university-level input to help make the coursework as relevant as possible to align with today’s workforce needs and transfer to 4-year colleges.
The associate degree in information technology (IT) will prepare students to enter the workforce in an entry level position in the field of information technology upon graduation. Students will learn about best practices for troubleshooting various technology related issues, performance aspects of multiple operating systems, principles of information assurance, basic aspects of web development, computer networking, best practices for maintaining current technology resources, how to communicate professionally, how to create and use relational databases, how to administer and maintain servers and how to deploy emerging technology on various platforms.
“Having and maintaining IT systems is essential in almost every industry, and this has created ongoing demand for staff to sustain those systems. These individuals serve as the first line of support to keep the various technology platforms functioning at peak performance,” said Ali Rafieymehr, interim president at RVCC and vice president of academic affairs. “We are excited to begin offering this program in the fall and providing students the opportunity to prepare for a career with very strong job prospects. The program also enables students to gain real world experience in an internship setting or by creating a culminating project of their learning in a capstone course.”
The associate degree in computer science & global innovation will prepare students for an entry level position in the field of computer science which includes design and development of computer software and the challenges and issues faced while working with technology in a global environment. There is a significant need for experts in the field of computer science who are innovative in the use of technology in a global economy. There are many career opportunities for which an associate degree graduate can be hired and these positions are often working with other members of a team to create software for various technology platforms for businesses to function at peak performance in a global environment.
“The new program is designed to present students with innovative approaches to understand local and global opportunities, challenges and issues that companies are facing these days developing complex software and be able to make a contribution to the success of those companies,” Dr. Rafieymehr – a computer scientist himself – said. “Computer Science remains one of the fastest growing fields, with a projected shortage of qualified job candidates for the foreseeable future for programmers, networkers, database professionals and web developers.”
Dr. Rafieymehr will be integrally involved with both programs given his background and will be teaching the introduction to programming class in the computer science & Global Innovation program.
Both programs received input on the program design from such companies as Dyn, and Meltwater and from computer science faculty from Plymouth State University and Keene State College. Both are designed so students can transfer credits and continue on towards a four-year degree if they choose to do so. Registration is open and the full curriculum for both the Information technology and the computer science & Global Innovation degrees can be found online.
