Support from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation provides full tuition for 15 high school students
Claremont, New Hampshire - River Valley Community College (RVCC) is adding a new program to its lineup of Catch the Wave courses, which are offered at reduced cost to high school students interested in experiencing the rigors of college life and academics before receiving their diplomas. The C++ programming class, is part of RVCC’s commitment to support New Hampshire’s future technology workforce needs. It also removes common barriers that often prevent students from succeeding in academic pursuits after graduation: finances and difficulties transitioning to college and career. The program is funded by a $4,500 grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.
“These courses are helping New Hampshire students succeed and prepare for great careers that are available right here in New Hampshire,” said Richard Ober, president and CEO of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. “The Foundation is committed to increasing opportunity for all of our kids and helping to build a stronger workforce for tomorrow.”
According to recent data, New Hampshire has nearly 3,000 unfilled jobs in high tech roles. RVCC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ali Rafieymehr hopes this latest addition to the program’s offerings helps connect those with the aptitude for STEM-related fields to the pathways to those careers.
“Catch the Wave is for high school students, and older homeschooled students to earn college credit while getting a glimpse into what expectations are at this level,” said Rafieymehr, who will teach the course. “The new C++ course is a great opportunity to spark a love of technology and nurture the next generation of computer scientists while offsetting the cost of a certificate or degree.”
The course begins with RVCC’s spring semester; January 17 to May 8, and will be held at RVCC’s Claremont campus at 1 College Place. Tuition is $310, and the Charitable Foundation grant covers the cost for students with financial need.  Students who successfully complete the course will earn four college credits, which are accepted at RVCC and are typically transferrable to other institutions.
