Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, President of River Valley Community College has been selected to speak on three upcoming panels being held in Louisiana, New Jersey and Chicago this spring.
“It is an honor to be invited to speak at events locally, regionally and nationally where I can share the great work happening at River Valley Community College. We are a small college with a big vision and it is through sharing best practices and collaborating that we can best support the success of our amazing students,” said President Harvey-Smith.
At the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) 23rd Annual Workforce Development Institute (WDI) in New Orleans this month, Dr. Harvey-Smith will participate in a panel titled “Big Things Can Come in Small Packages”. She will share innovative and successful initiatives occurring with River Valley Community College and Business and Industry Partners and how small colleges are at the forefront of rapid response to economic and workforce challenges as a result of their ability to innovate nimbly, while working with limited resources.
This event will showcase AACC college’s commitment to advancing, “The Next Big Things”, a limited set of action priorities guiding the association’s national leadership for community colleges over the next 3 to 5 years. WDI provides a forum to showcase the innovative work that campuses have done to close the skills gap and prepare a more educated citizenry. WDI 2016’s theme is “Orchestrating Opportunities”. Presidents from Tri-County Technical College, SC; Seminole State College, OK; and the Education Program Manager from Appalachian Regional Commission, DC and Executive Director, Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program, KY will also serve as panelists.
In March, Dr. Harvey-Smith will serve on the President’s Panel at the NCBAA Northeast 2016 Spring Conference, being held at Essex County Community College in Newark, NJ discussing Educational Leadership. The Conference Theme is Changing Faces of The American Community College.
President and CEO, of the American Association of Community Colleges Walter Bumphus and Mr. David Baime Senior Vice President, Government Relations and Research at American Association of Community Colleges are Conference Speakers. Joining Dr. Harvey-Smith on the Panel will be Dr. Thomas Isekenegbe, President, Bronx Community College, NY; Dr. Scott Evenbeck, President, Guttman Community College, NY and Dr. Quentin Bullock, President, Community College of Allegheny County, PA.
Our Camelot Moment: A New Day for Community Colleges is the theme for this year’s 96th AACC Annual Convention and Meeting to be held in April. The AACC annual meeting is among the largest and most dynamic gatherings of educational leaders, attracting over 2,000 community college presidents and senior administrators, as well as international educators, representatives of business/industry and federal agencies. Considered a premiere event for community college leaders, AACC's Annual Convention offers unprecedented professional development as well as the opportunity to network, share, and learn from professionals in the fields of education, business and industry, and the government sector.
President Harvey-Smith who was elected to the AACC Board of Directors began her three year term in July, will be presenting on” Meeting the Challenge: Filling The Skills Gap: A River Valley Imperative and will explore opportunities for community colleges to respond nationally and regionally to this challenge through uniquely crafted partnerships and collaborations with business and industry to support economic development and job creation. Joining Dr. Harvey-Smith for this presentation will be Kristyn Van Ostern, Associate Vice Chancellor for the Community College System of New Hampshire.
