RVCC President Selected for Two National Presentations

Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, the president of River Valley Community College (RVCC) in Claremont and Keene, was selected to share her leadership expertise by both the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Dr. Harvey-Smith presented on March 21 and April 4, at the NCBAA and AACC conferences respectively to deliver a message on the challenges and opportunities of organizational leadership, lessons learned and advice to new leaders. Also shared was a message on the importance of community colleges in economic and community development.

NCBAA serves as a collaborative voice, promoting the academic success of African American students, faculty, staff and administrators and is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges. AACC, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the national "voice for community colleges,” representing nearly 1,200 two-year, associate degree–granting institutions.

Charlene Lovett, chair of River Valley Community College’s Advisory Board and local councilman, said, “This is great news and we need to get the word out. This is an excellent example of how leaders in Claremont are engaged at the national level. We are thrilled to have Dr. Harvey-Smith here, and doing such exciting and commendable work.”

“These represent exciting opportunities to help cultivate leaders and to share much of the good work being done in New Hampshire, at River Valley Community College, through the Community College System of New Hampshire and with partnerships and collaborations, which serve to lift and sustain our communities and support economic and community development,” said President Harvey-Smith.

Dr. Harvey-Smith was appointed in March 2013 and took the reins of RVCC in July 2013. She will be formally installed as the president of River Valley Community College on Sept. 19, 2014.
