Applicants to the RVCC Massage Therapy program must attest that they can meet the following Essential Skills of the Massage Therapist prior to acceptance into the Massage Therapy program.

Communication Skills(Required)
Massage therapists need to listen carefully to clients in order to understand what they want to achieve through massage sessions. Massage therapists must be able to explain the procedures and standards that will be followed in the massage room to all clients. Massage therapists must have the ability to control the volume and tone of their voice to appropriate levels for the environment.
Decision-making Skills(Required)
Massage therapists must evaluate each client’s needs and recommend the best treatment based on that person’s needs.
Discretion and confidentiality(Required)
Massage therapists are privy to the medical and personal details of clients. It is essential that massage therapists understand the need to keep all personal information of clients private.
Empathy(Required)
Massage therapists must give clients a positive experience, which requires building trust between therapist and client. Making clients feel comfortable is necessary for therapists to expand their client base.
Proper Hygiene(Required)
Massage therapists must take great care to appear clean and professional. Massage therapists must be free of any strong scents such as body odor, bad breath, cigarette smoke, perfumes, colognes, essential oils and lotions. Fingernails must also be kept clean, trimmed and filed. Clothing must also be free of heavy fragrance and appropriate for a clinical setting.
Physical Stamina(Required)
Massage therapists may give several treatments during a workday and may have to stay on their feet throughout massage appointments. Massage Therapists must be able to work while standing for several hours each day.
Physical strength and dexterity(Required)
Massage therapists must be strong and able to exert pressure through a variety of movements of the arms and hands when manipulating a client’s muscles. Being able to carry a massage table or massage chair is also necessary. A Massage therapist must be able to comfortably lift and carry approximately 40lbs.
Collaboration skills(Required)
Massage therapists must be able to work with other professionals in order to achieve shared goals.
Organization and Time management skills(Required)
Massage therapists must be able to complete treatments within a set frame of time in order to remain on schedule. Massage therapists must also be able to complete SOAP notes for all their clients by the end of the day.
Reading and writing skills.(Required)
Massage therapists must be able to comprehend and create SOAP notes for clients. They must have the ability to collaborate with other massage therapists and healthcare professionals using documentation. Massage therapists must be able to read English at a basic 12th grade level and writing English to a basic 9th grade level as defined by the NAEP.
Basic math skills(Required)
Massage therapists must be able to complete math computations to a basic 7th grade level as defined by the NAEP.
Basic technology skills(Required)
Massage therapists must be comfortable using and learning computer systems for inputting SOAP notes. This includes but is not limited to PC’s, iPads and Smartphones.
Dependability(Required)
Massage therapists thrive on regular clientele, and a regular clientele requires that a massage therapist fulfil their commitments to appointments.
Safety(Required)
Massage therapists must foster a safe massage environment for themselves, coworkers and clients.
Willingness to touch and be touched by others(Required)
You must be open to touching, and being touched, by all individuals, without discrimination against any specific person or group of people including but not limited to differences in disability, ethnicity, gender identity, marital status, physical build, or sexual orientation; religious, national, or political affiliation; or social or economic status."

Their signature also indicates that the applicant meets the following requirements as required by the State of NH for licensure as a massage therapist: i. Good mental and physical health. ii. Not convicted in New Hampshire or in any other state of any crime involving violence inflicted on a person or threatened against a person, or any sexually-related crime.
