Meet our President
Alfred Williams IV became president of River Valley Community College on July 2, 2018.
Williams has enjoyed a twenty-year career in higher education primarily in the New England area. He held positions at Quinebaug Valley Community College in Danielson, CT, MassBay Community College in Wellesley, MA and Northeastern University in Boston, MA.
He graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in Government and holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois College of Law. He began his career in the legal profession, but soon found his passion working at community colleges.
“When I started working at a community college, I found my true professional calling,” Williams said. “Community colleges change lives. When students receive that degree or certificate and graduate prepared for a fulfilling career or to take the next step on their educational pathway, we see the transformative effect of a student-centered college education. Being part of those successes inspires me every day to advocate for students and ensure we provide the best experience possible for them. And we do this in a cost-effective way for the students and taxpayers.”
With significant background in college financial aid, Williams is highly attuned to the challenges of affordability and access. His experience has included developing innovative strategies to help students overcome financial barriers, as well as to positon institutions for success in recruitment, retention, and student achievement.
Williams has taught courses in Business Law, American Government and Comparative Politics. He has also been part of accreditation teams through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), currently known as the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).
