Overview
- Are you curious about the natural world and how it works?
- Want to learn about the inner workings of the human body and its interactions with the environment?
- Have you thought about doing research in biology?
- Are you starting your journey toward a graduate degree in health care, such as veterinary sciences or human medicine?
Biological Science provides a pathway of transfer for students seeking to pursue bachelor’s degrees in the biological or health sciences fields. Through our affordable program and small classes, you will develop a solid background in mathematics and sciences that will have you well prepared to transfer to a bachelor’s degree in the biological or health sciences. Courses are taught by supportive faculty who continually work to ensure course content is relevant and contemporary. Students who participate in the program learn to think critically, reason logically, develop competency in biological science laboratory skills, discover the nature and practice of science, and express scientific ideas confidently in writing and verbally.
Why RVCC?
The biological science degree has many transfer opportunities that are designed to facilitate entrance to a bachelor’s degree in biological or health sciences. Past students have gone on to schools such as Dartmouth College, Keene State College, UNH, and Franklin Pierce University.
Career Options
- Laboratory technician
- Laboratory assistant
To prepare students to transfer to bachelor’s degree programs in biological or health sciences through a program of study that follows national standards for biology majors and emulates the first two years of a four-year college degree in biological or health sciences.
Program Goals
In accordance with its mission, the program aims to:
- Provide rigorous and diverse courses comparable to four-year colleges and universities
- Increase students’ knowledge and understanding about living organisms and contemporary issues in fields such as medicine, agriculture, and ecology
- Provide students the opportunity to read, comprehend, and apply biological research
- Emphasize connections between STEM majors (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)used to solve issues in biology
- Provide learning supports for students, including peer and professional tutors, to help students become confident in their science and mathematics knowledge
- Provide opportunities to participate in biomedical research and biomedical technologies
Program Outcomes
Students who participate in the program learn to think critically, reason logically, develop competency in biological science laboratory skills, discover the nature and practice of science, and express scientific ideas confidently in writing and verbally.
